Aspen Showcase: Fathom... by me!!

I have the pleasure of being able to write for Aspen Comics this summer and dive into the world of their flagship character, Fathom! I'm having a ball telling a tale of Aspen Matthew's teen years in this one-shot that hits in June. The art is being done by the incredible Talent Caldwell, marking his long-awaited return to the Aspen universe! I couldn't be happier and hope you'll check it out!!

Here's the info...

ASPEN SHOWCASE: ASPEN MATTHEWS #1

Written by C.B. Cebulski, pencils by Talent Caldwell, colors by John Starr.

Aspen's newest anthology series, Aspen Showcase, combines some of today's finest creators with several of comics best loved properties. Reunions abound in this very special one-shot as artist Talent Caldwell dives back into the Aspen universe to take on its flagship character, Aspen Matthews. Battling the Blue and saving the world are hardly any challenge compared to the troubling life of high school adolescence! Writer C. B. Cebulski takes readers on a journey back to Aspen's childhood as she attends her high school reunion and runs into some very special friends from her past, reminding her of a few special memories as well!

This issue features two covers, one by Talent Caldwell and another by Ale Garza. Check 'em out!!

Iron Man Rocked!

I had the pleasure of seeing a press screening this weekend. I was BLOWN AWAY! The movie is incredible!! I still get goose bumps thinking about parts of it! Robert Downey Jr. steals the show. He IS Tony Stark! Really, almost every character is perfectly cast and Favreau is a genius the way he built and paced the film. Iron Man has now now my favorite super hero movie! Sorry X-Men 2...

I'm Getting A Comic Book Tattoo

TORI AMOS INKS THE COMIC BOOK TATTOO!

This July the ever-growing relationship between comics and music reaches new heights as Tori Amos and Image Comics release COMIC BOOK TATTOO, a 480-page, full color anthology adapting the themes and ideas behind her songs into a lush volume of sequential art.

“I have been surprised, excited and pleasantly shocked by these comics that are extensions of the songs that I have loved and therefore welcome these amazing stories of pictures and words because they are uncompromisingly inspiring,” says Amos. “It shows you thought is a powerful formidable essence and can have a breathtaking domino effect."

To assemble COMIC BOOK TATTOO's diverse roster of talent, Amos worked alongside editor Rantz Hoseley, co-creator behind the upcoming DISPLACED
PERSONS and VIX. Together they formed a line up featuring Y: THE LAST MAN's Pia Guerra, Leah Moore, John Reppion David Mack, Hope Larson, Ryan Kelly, Jonathan Hickman, Colleen Doran, Eric Canete, Ted McKeever, Jock, Anthony Johnston, Dame Darcy, Carla Speed McNeil, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Mark Buckingham, Ivan Brandon, C.B. Cebulski and many more, including an introduction by SANDMAN creator Neil Gaiman.

Editor Hoseley added, "While the connections between comics and music have been long established by generations of creators, Comic Book Tattoo is the pure distillation of how these two art forms inspire and feed off of each other across all the classifications, genres and styles of comic storytelling. Like Tori’s music, these stories run the gamut of human experience, emotion and imagination brought to life by some of the most compelling and innovative creators in the field of comics."

COMIC BOOK TATTOO, a 12” x 12” 480-page anthology, will be in stores July 23rd.

Never let it be said...

...that the Australians don't like their drink!

They may make their JaegerBombs just like we do, but down here in Oz they get all creative and drink them after tipping over the glasses into each other like dominoes! Kind of a pain in the ass to shoot after that, but fun to watch and marvel at when you're half in the bag.

We were also introduced to a few new shots, like the Pancake, which is vodka, Bailey's and something else I forget, with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sugared rim. It tastes just like... you guessed it... a pancake! It really does!

And these bad boys below were Jam Donuts, which are Bailey's, Chambord and something else, also with sugared rims, that tasted just like jam, or jelly for us Americans, donuts! Again, the similar taste was uncanny.

They may taste good, but are they potent, you may ask? It was our new drinking buddy John Rhys-Davies (aka Gimli from LOTR, or more importantly Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark!) who put it most eloquently when he said, "If I put one more jam donut into my body, the half-dozen I'd just ingested will soon be making their way out."

And then there were the Squished Frogs, my least favorite new shot, which were vodka, creme de minte and Bailey's (Yes, they like their Bailey's down here!) with a touch of Chambord on top for the bloody squished effect.

And even though I didn't particularly like them, you wouldn't catch me complaining about them...

However, the clear winner of strongest but most disgusting shot of the night went to the Navy Seal, aka the ABC shot, which was Absinthe, Bacardi 151 and Cointreau. Uggh! Tasted like shit and knocked you on your ass! Even I could only stomach one.

And since I've been asked what my favorite Aussie beer so far is, it's James Esquire Pale Ale. A simply wonderful brew!!

The Company I Keep

So the way Supanova works is that they fly us down for their first show in Melbourne, put us up for a week so we can enjoy Australia, then we do a second con in Brisbane the following weekend. It's a great pop culture event, blending sci-fi, movies, anime, and comics. And as far as guests are concerned, we all tend to hang out and move around together as a group, and as the lowest profile guy on the list, here's some of the esteemed company I'm keeping this week...

In the back row:
Jenny Fallon, author of The Hythrun Chronicles and the Stargate SG-! novel.
My fat ass.
Michael Winslow, Man of 10,000 Sound Effects, from Police Academy, Spaceballs and Gremlins.
Jewel Staite, Kaylee from Firefly and Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis.
Spike Spencer, voice of Shinji in Evangelion.

Front row:
Daniel Zachirou, organizer of Supanova.
Colleen Clinkenbeard, voice of Luffy from One Piece.
Monica Rial, voice of Simca from Air Gear.

Other guests include John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli in LOTR, James Kyson Lee, who plays Ando on Heroes, Lou Ferrigno, Greg Horn and Arthur Suydam.

Oh, The Places You'll Go...

Fulfilling one of my lifelong dreams, I'm in Australia!! Actually here for work, for the Supanova conventions. We're in Melbourne for a week, then off up to Brisbane at the end of the week. It's been mostly business and con stuff so far, but today the exploring and sightseeing starts. A few quick for now...

My first glimpse of Oz from the plane...

Driving into Melbourne...

My first Australian meal, a Victorian beef burger at Greasy Joe's in St. Kilda. It was amazing!

Rumor has it something prevented them from calling it Burger King here. Looking into it...

Best name for a linen shop ever...

The Little Perks

So here's a patch I requested from an artist today...

I can't tell you which comic it's from yet, but I think it's pretty clear what it will be covering. :)

The only reason I'm posting this is that it made me laugh. It reminded me how fun and/or funny working in comics can be from time to time. I sat here today and spent 15-20 minutes pondering the intricacies of bra design as well as color choices, black or white, and the overall effect our decision would have on the contrast of the page as a whole.

Kind of absurd when you sit back and think about it...

Bizarre

I had this crazy dream last night that Rainn Wilson and I were pro basketball players who quit the game to become lumberjacks. While having lunch one day after a hard morning's logging, we were attacked by a swarm of bees, only to be saved by Britney Spears and Travis Charest who came to our rescue wielding these sci-fi sonic weapons.

Explain that one! :)

Random Cebulski Book of the Week

This week's Marvel Spotlight featuring Laurell K. Hamilton and George R.R. Martin also contains a brief interview with me, discussing breaking into Marvel and Avengers Fairy Tales. I'm still not sure how me, possibly Marvel's lowest selling writer, was able to weasel his way into a book focusing on these two best sellers. Maybe it was the initials? :)

International Flavor

McDonald's Italy has come up with the coolest and most appropriate name for a fast food item ever... Veritgo Fries!

And while I refuse to eat Mickey D's anywhere where the food is as amazing as Bologna, their new Tirolese burger with raw speck ham and grilled onions did make me at least stop and question my decision for a minute...

I have never eaten better than last week in Italy and there are plenty of food pics coming soon...
