Two Soleil Comics Out Today

The third issue of Barbara Canepa and Alessandro Barbucci's SKY DOLL hits today, adapted into English by yours truly. There's an interesting early review up here. This issue also features a preview of another newly licensed Soleil title, YTHAQ: THE FORSAKEN WORLD, by Christophe Arleston and Adrien Floch, which I'll be adapting as well.

You should also be sure to check out Marvel's other offering from Soleil this month, UNIVERSAL WAR ONE by Denis Bajram. It's a amazing sci-fi epic that should just not be missed!

New Samura Art Book

My buddy Aki just dropped me an e-mail to let me know there's a new Hiroaki Samura art book out!

Ultimate Alliance: Fusion

Although I had to unfortunately decline working on the sequel to the Ultimate Alliance video game, I'm excited as hell that they're making a follow-up and know it's gonna kick all kinds of ass! The teaser trailer for Ultimate Alliance: Fusion was just released at E3 this week...

My SDCC Panel Schedule

Yes, I'll be at San Diego Comic Con next week (or Comic Con International in San Diego, if you wanna get technical) but I won't have a booth or a table this year. As I'm working for multiple companies across multiple media on multiple projects, I wanted to take this year to walk around and have meetings and meet people and enjoy myself without being glued to a solitary spot. But you will be able to find me as I'll be appearing on numerous panels and doing several signings over the course of the con. First, here are the panels I'll be on...

Thursday, July 24th, 1:45PM, The X-Men Panel in Room 6B

Thursday, July 24th, 4:45PM to 5:30PM, Mondo Marvel Panel in Room 6A

Thursday, July 24th, 5:30PM to 6PM, Writing a Pitch: The Comic Experience Panel in Room 30CDE

Friday, July 25th, 10AM, Marvel: Your Universe Panel in Room 6A

Friday, July 25th, 11:30AM, Cup O’ Joe in Room 6CDEF

Saturday, July 26th, 11:30AM, Tori Amos' Comic Book Tattoo Panel in Room 6B

Saturday, July 26th, 4:30PM, Marvel's Secret Invasion Panel in Room 6A

Sunday July 27th, 1PM, The Michael Turner Tribute Panel in Room 5AB

The ChesterQuesters are coming!

You know, I've been so busy this past month that it didn't even occur to me that three comics hit last week featuring the artwork of new talents that were discovered during my ChesterQuest Worldwide Talent Search...

Marco Turini from Italy made his Marvel penciling debut on Squadron Supreme #1.

Penciler Marco Castiello and colorist Barbara Ciardo of GG Studios, also from Italy, were featured for the first time in America in Secret Invasion: Front Line #1.

And the always incredible David Lafuente, a Spainard living in London who I met in Dublin, had his amazing artwork grace the pages of Hellcat #1.

And these guys are just the tip of the iceberg!

CREATURE FEATURE - A New Horror Anthology

This is something new and crazy that I'm a part of that I thought some of you might dig. Truth be told, I'm usually not a horror guy, and was a little hesitant at first when my old buddy Mike Raicht approached me about being a part of this. But inspiration hit after I saw Grindhouse and I came up with a pretty off-the-wall short story for this collection. I just read the full finished issue and loved it! I do hope you'll check it out!

Th3rd World Studios (http://www.th3rdworld.com) TO RELEASE NEW HORROR SERIES, CREATURE FEATURE.

Following the success of their second comic series Space Doubles, a retro science fiction anthology, Th3rd World Studio’s presents Creature Feature, a double sized Drive In horror movie experience.

“Creature Feature is something I've been preparing my whole life to edit. Hundreds of horror movies, most of them questionable in nature, filled my youth with hours of completely unsupervised fear, laughter, and in some extreme cases I'd rather not revisit, tears. To not only bring together, but to actually find, a group of like-minded 70s and 80s horror lovers is a real treat. And to be honest, shocked and frightened the hell out of me”, said series creator and Army of Darkness, Exiles scribe Mike Raicht.

Each issue is 48 pages with three and a half scintillating tales of monstrous horror done right by top industry veterans, including C.B. Cebulski, Chris Yost, Andy Schmidt, Stuart Moore, Leah Moore, John Reppion and Brian Smith. -- over the top and gratuitous with a super-cool soundtrack. (Readers are responsible for providing their own tunes, so break out the 8-Track or dust off your 45's!)

Grab a date, leave the kids at home, and stuff as many friends in your trunk as possible. The first issue hits stands in September with out of this world terror in Night of the Abductors by Chris Yost (writer of top selling titles X-FORCE and SECRET INVASION: YOUNG AVENGERS/RUNAWAYS), hot girls and their feathery friends in Hooters by C.B. Cebulski (SPIDER-MAN and X-MEN), creepy crawlies in Why Did It Have To Be Spiders? by Andy Schmidt (MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS and X-MEN: DIVIDED WE STAND) and the first half of the rocktacular Rockenstein by Brian Smith (THE ADVENTURES OF DANIEL BOOM AKA LOUDBOY and PICKLES FROM PLUTO) A tale so demented the Drive-In is only willing to screen the first half of it lest they get shut down altogether for public indecency!

“I think everyone will find something to entertain them in some way. At $4.50 for 48 pages it's cheaper than going to your local movie theatre and you get three and a half features and a comic strip. All you need to do is provide the popcorn, soda and the date”, said Drive In host Mike Raicht.

Creature Feature is a two issue (48 pages B/W - $4.50) series with the first issue hitting shelves in September 08. (Diamond Order # JUL084217).

Night of the Abductors by Chris Yost and Jon Reed

Hooters by me and Shaun "artchild" Turnbull

Rockenstein by Brian Smith

As Th3rd World is a smaller publisher, I kindly urge you to pre-order this book from your local retailer to make sure you get your hands on a copy!

And we're totally all open to press, interview and artwork requests. Please contact Michael DeVito at devito@th3rdworld.com for all that info.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Congrats, Felipe!

I just wanted to join the growing chorus and offer my heartfelt congratulations to my buddy Felipe Smith, who has become one of the first non-Japanese ever to have his new comic series published in a monthly Japanese comic book magazine. Felipe's "Peepo Choo" finally debuted in Morning 2! There's no one who approaches comic books with more energy and enthusiasm and I could not be happier that it's Felipe who is breaking comic boundaries and tearing down the perceptions that the Japanese manga market is closed to foreigners! He's one of the best ambassadors American comics could ask for!

Wizard World Chicago Schedule

I'll be attending Wizard World Chicago this coming weekend, June 26th-29th. I'll be set up in Artists Alley at table 4302 right between Adi Granov and Olivier Coipel. I'll be signing and selling there over all three days whenever I'm not at a panel or other signing session, and here's that schedule...

Friday
11 am to 12 pm – Mondo Marvel Panel

12 to 1 pm – Signing @ Marvel Booth

3 to 4 pm – Ultimate Universe Panel

Saturday
1 to 2 pm – Secret Invasion Panel

3 to 4 pm – Signing @ Marvel Booth

5 to 6 pm – Cup O’ Bendis Panel

Sunday
11 am to 12 pm – Prize or No Prize

12:30 to 1:30 pm – Signing @ Marvel Booth

2 pm to 3 pm – Marvel: Your Universe

I'll sign whatever anyone brings me with no limits, I'll have all kinds of books for sale at my table, and I look forward to meeting you all. And during the evening, you'll most likely be able to find me at the Red Bar in the Hyatt. Buying me beer ensures entertaining conversation. :)

Oh, and one last thing... unfortunately, I will not be doing any portfolio reviews at the con. All aspiring artists will need to go to the Marvel booth for info on how to get your work looked at. Sorry about that!

See you soon!

The Brilliance of Seth Fisher

I love artists' sketchbooks. I walk around at every con and snatch up as many as I can from all the artists whose work I know and love. I have hundreds of them and look at a few of them daily. The work that so many of these talents do inspires me to no end in my writing. But yesterday at Jim Hanley's Universe I found what may be my favorite sketchbook yet... Seth Fisher's Batman Snow/Tokyo Sketchbook. Simply put, it's brilliant.

The material contained in each and every sketchbook I've bought varies; some artists fill theirs with headshots, others with unused covers sketches, some with new stories and art, others with abstract drawing and paintings. This "new" offering from Seth was a collection of images takes right from his personal sketchbook from 2005, it seems. And it's a look not only at his art, but inside his head. This is one of the first sketchbooks I've collected that's truly given me a real look into the creative process of an artist whose work I love. It peels back the curtain for a nice long look into the mind of an amazing artist. The book clearly illustrates, literally and figuratively, just how Seth approached art and comics. From anatomy to perspective to motion, from the use of shadows and negative space, from architecture to character design, after reading this little book, I like to think I now have a better understanding of how Seth saw not only his work, but the world around him. And that says a lot given the book has no words in it.

As many of you know, Seth is unfortunately no longer with us. He died tragically in 2006, taken from us much too early. I had the pleasure of knowing Seth, enjoyed spending time with him, and always looked forward to catching up whenever we met. His death shocked and saddened me, as it did everyone whose lives he touched. However, it's good to know his family will be keeping his memory alive by making sure some of his unseen work will now see print. While this sketchbook reminds us of the genius we lost when Seth died, I like to believe it will also serve as continuing inspiration for so many other artist that open it. Seth would have wanted it that way.

To learn more about Seth and his work, and to find out how to get your hand on this Tokyo Sketchbook, visit www.floweringnose.com.

I got carded at a bar last night

I laughed.

I mean, c'mon... here in NYC of all places?!

That hasn't happened in a while.

I laughed.

First this made me laugh. Then it pissed me off. Now I don't know what to think...

The Vader bit is pretty well done, and the Emperor's laugh is a nice touch. But seriously now, Lucas approved this?!

Not only is it a great TPB full of classic Cow characters re-interpreted by some amazing creators, but it also sports a lovely new original cover by Kenneth Rocafort, who is one of my favorite new artists, as well as an introduction by yours truly. They were even kind enough to put my name on the cover! Check it out...

A Writing Self

Read this quote by Salman Rushdie today and it struck a chord so I thought I'd share...

"There's a writing self which is not quite your ordinary social self and which you don't really have access to except at the moment when you're writing, and certainly in my view, I think of that as my best self. To be able to be that person feels good; it feels better than anything else."

Tales of the Fear Agent TPB

Got a box in the mail today from Dark Horse and I had no clue what it was. Imagine my surprise when I opened it up to discover comp copies of Rick Remender's TALES OF THE FEAR AGENT TPB inside. This volume collects all the Fear Agent back-ups and short stories people have done over the years for Rick, and includes a little tale that I did with Japanese manga artist Tommy Ohtsuka! I had no idea it was already collected and on sale. I was really happy with the way this story turned out and I hope that you'll check it out and enjoy it! Here's the info...

My Favorite Wonderlost Review Yet

Iron Man Rocked!

I had the pleasure of seeing a press screening this weekend. I was BLOWN AWAY! The movie is incredible!! I still get goose bumps thinking about parts of it! Robert Downey Jr. steals the show. He IS Tony Stark! Really, almost every character is perfectly cast and Favreau is a genius the way he built and paced the film. Iron Man has now now my favorite super hero movie! Sorry X-Men 2...

I'm Getting A Comic Book Tattoo

TORI AMOS INKS THE COMIC BOOK TATTOO!

This July the ever-growing relationship between comics and music reaches new heights as Tori Amos and Image Comics release COMIC BOOK TATTOO, a 480-page, full color anthology adapting the themes and ideas behind her songs into a lush volume of sequential art.

“I have been surprised, excited and pleasantly shocked by these comics that are extensions of the songs that I have loved and therefore welcome these amazing stories of pictures and words because they are uncompromisingly inspiring,” says Amos. “It shows you thought is a powerful formidable essence and can have a breathtaking domino effect."

To assemble COMIC BOOK TATTOO's diverse roster of talent, Amos worked alongside editor Rantz Hoseley, co-creator behind the upcoming DISPLACED
PERSONS and VIX. Together they formed a line up featuring Y: THE LAST MAN's Pia Guerra, Leah Moore, John Reppion David Mack, Hope Larson, Ryan Kelly, Jonathan Hickman, Colleen Doran, Eric Canete, Ted McKeever, Jock, Anthony Johnston, Dame Darcy, Carla Speed McNeil, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Mark Buckingham, Ivan Brandon, C.B. Cebulski and many more, including an introduction by SANDMAN creator Neil Gaiman.

Editor Hoseley added, "While the connections between comics and music have been long established by generations of creators, Comic Book Tattoo is the pure distillation of how these two art forms inspire and feed off of each other across all the classifications, genres and styles of comic storytelling. Like Tori’s music, these stories run the gamut of human experience, emotion and imagination brought to life by some of the most compelling and innovative creators in the field of comics."

COMIC BOOK TATTOO, a 12” x 12” 480-page anthology, will be in stores July 23rd.

Never let it be said...

...that the Australians don't like their drink!

They may make their JaegerBombs just like we do, but down here in Oz they get all creative and drink them after tipping over the glasses into each other like dominoes! Kind of a pain in the ass to shoot after that, but fun to watch and marvel at when you're half in the bag.

We were also introduced to a few new shots, like the Pancake, which is vodka, Bailey's and something else I forget, with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sugared rim. It tastes just like... you guessed it... a pancake! It really does!

And these bad boys below were Jam Donuts, which are Bailey's, Chambord and something else, also with sugared rims, that tasted just like jam, or jelly for us Americans, donuts! Again, the similar taste was uncanny.

They may taste good, but are they potent, you may ask? It was our new drinking buddy John Rhys-Davies (aka Gimli from LOTR, or more importantly Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark!) who put it most eloquently when he said, "If I put one more jam donut into my body, the half-dozen I'd just ingested will soon be making their way out."

And then there were the Squished Frogs, my least favorite new shot, which were vodka, creme de minte and Bailey's (Yes, they like their Bailey's down here!) with a touch of Chambord on top for the bloody squished effect.

And even though I didn't particularly like them, you wouldn't catch me complaining about them...

However, the clear winner of strongest but most disgusting shot of the night went to the Navy Seal, aka the ABC shot, which was Absinthe, Bacardi 151 and Cointreau. Uggh! Tasted like shit and knocked you on your ass! Even I could only stomach one.

And since I've been asked what my favorite Aussie beer so far is, it's James Esquire Pale Ale. A simply wonderful brew!!

The Company I Keep

So the way Supanova works is that they fly us down for their first show in Melbourne, put us up for a week so we can enjoy Australia, then we do a second con in Brisbane the following weekend. It's a great pop culture event, blending sci-fi, movies, anime, and comics. And as far as guests are concerned, we all tend to hang out and move around together as a group, and as the lowest profile guy on the list, here's some of the esteemed company I'm keeping this week...

In the back row:
Jenny Fallon, author of The Hythrun Chronicles and the Stargate SG-! novel.
My fat ass.
Michael Winslow, Man of 10,000 Sound Effects, from Police Academy, Spaceballs and Gremlins.
Jewel Staite, Kaylee from Firefly and Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis.
Spike Spencer, voice of Shinji in Evangelion.

Front row:
Daniel Zachirou, organizer of Supanova.
Colleen Clinkenbeard, voice of Luffy from One Piece.
Monica Rial, voice of Simca from Air Gear.

Other guests include John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli in LOTR, James Kyson Lee, who plays Ando on Heroes, Lou Ferrigno, Greg Horn and Arthur Suydam.
